Craft 4 Crafters
On Friday 21 September at 10am, Craft 4 Crafters opens at Newark and Nottingham’s George Stephenson Pavillion. With an amazing 90 exhibitors, the three day Stitch & Thread 4 Crafters and Paper & Card 4 Crafters covers the full range of crafting from knitting to card-making, through buttons, embellishments, and pretty embroidery. Over the next four weeks, we’ll be giving away 20 pairs of tickets to the show in our exclusive blog competition. Every Monday morning, we’ll ask you a question, and the first five correct answers drawn out of our virtual hat after the competition closes on Sunday will win a pair of tickets to the show. Each week, there’ll be five pairs of tickets up for grabs, so don’t forget to drop by and enter for your chance to win. There'll be lots to see at the show, and it's a great chance to get inspiration - and yarn! - for a new project. Why not take advantage of the broad range of beautiful things on offer, and try something completely new? It's also the perfect opportunity to learn a new knitting skill, or try a new craft, whether it's felting, cross stitch or card-making. There'll be over 50 workshops over the three days, many of them free! We love looking around the paper craft and cross stitch stalls at these events. They have a lot of clever storage ideas and pretty embellishments which can really liven up your knitting. Look out for sequins, beads and pretty charms which make great stitch markers, as well as yarn, needles and accessories. There'll also be lots to look at and enjoy. Step into the past with the Needlecraft Museum. Look out for displays of work dating back to the Second World War including patterns, designs, books, threads and tools. As children under 15 get in free, it's a great day out for the whole family. Long, tall scarves
A good rule of thumb for scarves is to make it as long as the person who will be wearing it is tall. If you're knitting scarves for children, remember to make them narrower than you would for an adult. A good tip is to use the same pattern as you would for an adult scarf, but in a thinner yarn. Chunky yarn may prove too thick for smaller kids. Itchy or ideal?
There's nothing worse than finishing a hand knitted garment only to find it relegated to the back of the cupboard. One common complaint, particularly from children, is that hand knits can be itchy. It's hard to judge the feel of a yarn by the ball, so we recommend threading a couple of strands of the yarn through a pendant and wearing it for a couple of days. You'll quickly find out if it's itchy or not - and also whether it will fuzz with wear. Another option, which might work better for children, is to knit a few rounds on double-pointed or circular needles to make a cuff or wristlet. A k2 p2 rib gives a nice fit, and you'll be able to see the yarn in action. Punk Knits by Share Ross
The competition and offer are now closed. Punk Knits by Share Ross is still available to buy. Please contact Stewart, Tabori & Chang or ask at your favourite bookshop. ![]() Learn to drop stitches, make holes in your knitting, and try all the other things your grandma taught you not to do! This book by punk guitarist Share Ross is a guide to expressing the wilder side of your personality though your knitting. She encourages you to change yarns, hemlines, necklines and gauges to create your own truly individual piece. Her free and easy use of dropped stitches and ladders will also encourage you to think about knitting stitches in a new way. Many of the 26 projects in this book are designed to suit both men and women, and the patterns vary in difficulty from beginner to advanced. We particularly like the Decon Sweater. This amazingly versatile piece was inspired by Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. Using two yarns of different weights as well as holes and ladders, this is a truly unusual piece of knitwear.

HK Handknit sale
HK Handknits in Edinburgh are having a great summer sale - and as of this weekend, they've knocked an extra 10% off! Don't fret if you're not close enough to visit in person: you can visit the sale on at their online shop. They've got some great bargains and some big names including Noro, Jaeger, Rowan and Louisa Harding, so if there's anything you've been craving, check it out now. Knit's criminally good
We all love knitting challenges, and if you like crime novels as well we've found the perfect one for you. American crime writer Karin Slaughter is organising a knitting contest over on her website. She's commissioned two great free patterns, and whoever knits the best one will win a whole heap of knitting goodies. As Karin's books are quite gory, the knitting patterns are suitably bloodthirsty. Choose from a Ted Bundy hat and a Jeffrey Dahmer book bag. Both patterns are fairly simple - why not whip up your offering this weekend? Cute cardis
Reader Caroline Wallbank sent in these cute cardis which she knitted from the Perfect Primrose pattern in issue 24 of Simply Knitting. Caroline says: "I am a teaching assistant and made these two little coats for a teacher who has just had her baby. I tried to make tham even more special by adding unusual buttons. "Thank you for a great mag, I always find something that inspires me to get on and finish the existing project and get on to create something I have seen in your publication!" Thanks for sending the photo in Caroline! We're sure your friend will love the pretty clothes you made for her baby. ![]() Deytheur bag and yarn giveaway (issue 31)
