The canteen here at Simply Knitting HQ has had a facelift. Over the last few weeks, dozens of stunning photographs showcasing the sublime and the everyday have popped up, making us ask: where did these come from? Who took them?
With a little sleuthing, we discovered that the photos are the winners and runners up from last year's Digital Camera Photographer of the Year competition. Woah. We asked the team on Digital Camera Magazine for a bit more info.
"It’s completely free to enter and there is a main prize of £15,000 up for grabs, as well as prizes for each category," they said. "Amateur and professional photographers are both welcome."
"There are ten categories, these include the usual: People and Portraits, Animals, and Landscapes. We have a few interesting categories this year, Hidden Britain which should expose the real character or spirit of Britain and Creative Vision; the 'anything goes' category. There's also Young Photographer of the Year for people under the age of 17."
And then we asked: "Where's the knitting?" and they said "Um..."
We know there are talented photographers among you, so we want to see you in action. With a deadline of the 30th September 2008, there's plenty of time to submit your knitting shots – and non-knitting shots too – in as many of the categories as you like and hopefully next year we'll have your pictures on display!
We’re not the hottest photographers around, so we’ve persuaded the Digital Camera team to help us out with some top tips which we'll be posting over the next few weeks, and we've set up a Flickr pool, so you can share your photos straight away. Let us know if there are any aspects of photographing your knitting you'd particularly like to delve into, in the comments below.
