Knitting weekend in France

What's missing from this idyllic scene? Knitters of course!

Knitting workshop with Claire Montgomerie

"I am an enthusiastic knitter," says Katie Armitage, who organises creative weekends in the south west of France, "so I felt it time we ran a related workshop."

"We have managed to persuade the very talented Claire Montgomerie to lead our first knitting weekend, which will take place in May," she says, and with a rainy spring on the agenda in Britain the chance to spend a long weekend knitting in sunny France is certainly tempting.

Claire Montgomerie's knitting workshop takes place from 7-11 May 2009 and will focus on creating knitted and crocheted jewellery. Claire is also happy to help with specific knitting techniques such as finishing and making up, pattern reading and substituting yarns.

The workshops are designed to appeal to every level of expertise and there are a maximum of 10 places available. Numbers are deliberately kept low so that each participant will get the attention and direction they need from Claire.

Luxurious French living

The Soeurs Anglaises are based in the stunning 'maison de maitre' shown in the photos above. Originally a 14th century walnut mill, it's now a luxurious guest house. Set in the French countryside, the house has a lovely garden and plenty of space indoors and out. Warm French weather and a heated pool allow visitors to go swimming from May to September.

The house is owned by a wine connoisseur, and careful attention is paid to the quality of the food and wine provided to guests. "We offer celebrated, delicious, home cooking," says Katie. "Most of the vegetables come from our own garden."

There's also the opportunity to explore local markets and yarn shops – a great chance to find a knittable souvenir or to bag an unusual bargain.

Special discount

As this is their first knitting workshop, Les Soeurs Anglaises are offering a 10% discount to participants who sign up by the second week of April – so if you're interested, book now!

ASK: Have you seen a looped baby jacket pattern?

My friend Hazel has recently been blessed with a grandson and granddaughter. She's been looking for a knitting pattern for a baby's looped jacket. These jackets were popular in the 70s. She is not computer literate so cannnot search online so has asked me to look.

I have found lots of baby jackets and coats but none that have the all over looped design that she wants to make. If you could find one please advise.

The Simply Knitting team says: We've not come across a looped baby jacket pattern – perhaps one of our readers can help?

Alternatively, you could take a simple stocking stitch jacket pattern and replace the stocking stitch with loop stitch but this might change your gauge and would probably use rather more yarn than indicated.

Still not answered! Can you help?
